| Melittin, a 26 amino acid peptide, is the main component of Bee Venom and is a powerful anti-inflammatory peptide that is said to be 100 times more potent than hydrocortisone. Melittin exhibits an in vitro inhibitory effect on Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. At melittin concentrationa as low as 100ug/ml all spirochete motility ceased within seconds of the addition of melittin. Melittin or melittin-like peptides may be effective against Lyme disease (Clin. Infect. Dis., 25 Suppl 1, S48-51, 1997). Melittin has also been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting neutrophil superoxide and hydrogen peroxide production. A recent study showed the antiarthritic effect of melittin. Melittin prevented LPS induced transcriptional and DNA binding activity of NF-kB (Arthitis and Rheumatism, 50, 3504-3515, 2004). Reports also suggest that Melittin inhibits protein kinase C and AMP-dependent protein kinases. It is also a potent inhibitor of ATPase activity (Mol. Cell. Biochem., 114;57-63, 1992) and a activator of Phospholipase A-2 (JBC, 258: 13697-13702, 1983). | ||||
